Sleep Disorders
Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital’s Sleep Center helps ensure patients get a good night’s sleep. More than 100 million Americans of all ages fail to get adequate sleep each night. At least 84 sleep disorders lead to a lowered quality of life, reduced personal health and endangerment of public safety.
One of the most common and serious sleep disorders, sleep apnea, is potentially life threatening. It can lead to daytime sleepiness as well as high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke if not addressed.
If you believe you might have a sleep disorder, you should see your doctor, who may suggest a visit to a sleep disorders specialist. Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital’s Sleep Center offers a variety of tests for diagnosing most sleep disorders. As you sleep in comfortable surroundings, various body functions and measurements are recorded. After your sleep study, the sleep physician will make recommendations to your primary physician. Treatment may include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), medication, weight loss, sleep pattern changes, dental appliances, or surgery. A physician must refer all patients to the Sleep Center.
