Lake Forest Campus Revitalization
Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital is committed to a collaborative process and open communication with all members of our community in our campus revitalization project.
Northwestern Lake Forest has submitted a Campus Master Land Use Plan to revitalize its Lake Forest campus. The hospital is working closely with the city and local residents to finalize the best plan to meet the healthcare needs of our community for generations to come. The final plan will be shared with the community once approved by the City.

City of Lake Forest Plan Commission: December 14, 2011
Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital president Thomas J. McAfee, and project manager Carol Chiles, gave an overview and update on the planning project, including:
- The timeline for the new facility project
- The status of the traffic and site line studies
- Examples of modern healthcare facilities
- The range of building heights in contemporary hospitals that improve efficiency
- Investments made by the hospital to improve drainage adjacent to the North Muir Woods neighborhood
The Plan Commission asked that the hospital bring back a more detailed plan for the new building and continue its dialogue with community members on issues, including:
- Building height
- Traffic
- Roadway plans and access to the campus from Route 41, Route 43 and Deerpath
- Safety
- Site drainage
2nd Community Open House: November 17, 2011
Thomas J. McAfee, President of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, presented to the Lake Forest community the outline of the campus planning. Residents discussed with the hospital leadership their views on the following issues:
- Traffic and vehicular access to the campus
- Route 41 entrance to the campus
- Setbacks from the property line for the new building
- Grounds, landscaping and berms
- Hospital size
- Parking lot lights
- Environmentally friendly building design
- Building height
- Security
1st Community Open House: September 7, 2011
Thomas J. McAfee, President of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, discussed with the Lake Forest community the need to build a new, state-of-the-art medical facility on the Lake Forest Campus. The guiding principles for the project include:
- Expanded access to the distinctive, top-tier subspecialty clinical programs and physicians
- Delivers on Northwestern’s Patients First mission, improving the health of the community through high quality, patient centered care
- Sustains a campus-like feel that embraces health and wellness
- Serves Lake Forest and a growing surrounding community, ensuring access to care to all who seek it, regardless of their ability to pay
- Plans for flexibility and adaptability to meet the changing needs of the healthcare market
- Is a collaborative partner with the community
- Respects the history and tradition of the hospital and community
- Uses environmentally sustainable practices
